The Ashmolean

Iraq: Navel of the World

Palace Life [8]

This dinar (gold coin) bears the Muslim creed 'There is no god but God alone and he has no equal'. It was struck for the caliph Harun al-Rashid, who ruled Baghdad in the late 8th century AD. He is still a popular historical figure in Iraq today, especially because of his role in the famous 'Thousand and One Nights' with Sheherezade.
