John Evans' Lake-Dwelling Contacts

John Evans' postal address used by Dr. V. Gross

Sir John Evans was probably in touch with various antiquarians in the Alpine region, from whom he obtained the majority of the lake-dwelling artefact of his collection. We have evidence of correspondence with Dr. E. Desor, Dr. A. Morlot, Dr. M. Forel, Col. Schwab and Dr.  V. Gross. Unfortunately, the archives of the Ashmolean Museum only retain letters received from Dr. Gross.

The following letters are what remain from the correspondence between Evans and Gross. Unfortunately, not all the artefacts listed in the letters can be found in the Ashmolean lake-dwelling collection (the highlighted items are in the collection). The majority of letters contain fairly detailed drawings of the artefacts (click on the highlighted area to link to the drawing) and those highlighted are linked to a photograph of the original item (click on the highlighted number to link to the photograph).
