Plate imitating Valencian lustreware
Ulisse Cantagalli
Firenze (Florence), c. 1890 - 1900
47.5cm (diameter)
tin-glazed earthenware (maiolica); lustred
In the second half of the nineteenth century there was intense competition among collectors and museums across Europe for examples both of Spanish and Italian lustreware. The workshop in Florence run by Ulisse Cantagalli specialized in reproducing Renaissance tin-glazed wares (see WA1899.21 and WA1899.22), including lustreware. This imposing dish imitates the design of a Manises lustred dish of the late fifteenth century.
It came to the Museum as a bequest from the artist and collector Jon Catleugh (1920-2009), and pre-eminent scholar of the work of another great lustreware producer, William De Morgan (1839-1917).
Bequeathed by Jon Catleugh, 2009. WA2009.46
