Oval gilt-brass cased verge watch with stackfreed
Movement: The back plate is punched: AH (conjoined in a shield) and with a second shield containing a crowned double-headed eagle, possibly the town mark of Lubeck, c. 1600 - 1610

Case: Oval gilt-brass case with plain hinge and hinged, glazed bezel. The band is moulded with upper and lower quadrant sections enclosing a flat ringed band section. Gilt-brass pendant with later loose ring. Small gilt-brass button finial. Dial: An integral front of the case with a raised rim supports a silver dial engraved and enamelled in colours. The enamel filled hour numerals I-XII and a circle of alternately enamelled and plain rectangles for the quarter-hours surround a central area enamelled with flowers. There are also touch-pins at the hours. Single gilt hour hand with long tail. Movement: Oval gilt-brass plates with three bulbous ringed pillars riveted to the back plate and pinned at the front. Open mainspring contained by studs on the outside and a large shaped gilt-brass block on th inside. On the back plate is a stackfreed mechanism with the usual strong steel spring with a roller at the end operating on a gilt brass tail. The stackfreed wheel is made from brass. Four wheel train of brass wheels, the second wheel and third pinion recessed into the front plate and running in a separate screwed-on bridge, Verge escapement with the crown wheel pivoting in a large shaped block at the rear and the mainspring block at the front. Steel two-arm balance with two added brass circular weights where the cross arms join the rim. Pierced scroll hog=s bristle regulator with a dot index on the back plate. The balance pivots in a screwed-on scroll shaped cock on the front plate and an elaborately pierced scroll balance cock on the back plate, the table in the form of a grotesque.
