Gilt-brass and rock crystal cased verge watch in the form of a scallop-shell

Case: Gilt-brass frame with rock-crystal covers. The engraved silver band appears to be a 17th-century replacement for the original rock-crystal (there are bridges at the pendant and finial positions for the cover hinges). Dial: Gilt-brass dial engraved with a village scene within an applied silver chapter-ring with hours I-XII and arrow-head half-hour marks. Blued-steel hand. Movement: Shaped gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Tangent-screw set-up; fusee with gut line; three wheel train; verge escapement; balance cock screwed to the back plate. Signed on the back plate: Estienne hubert ARouen Estienne Hubert, Rouen, 1635-c. 1702. Literature: Baillie, Watches, 1929, pl. XXIII.3, p. 113.
