Reinhold Vasters, possibly (1827 - 1909)
Elongated octagonal gold, enamel and rock crystal cased verge watch

, c. 1640 or 19th century

case; rock crystal; faceted, gold, enamel; enamelled in black dial; gold, enamel; enamelled, blued-steel movement; gilt-brass; pierced

case 31.5 mm length case 17.3 mm width case 15.25 mm thickness movement 16.7 mm length movement 13.85 mm width movement 4.1 mm pillar height

Case: Elongated octagonal miniature case of faceted smoky rock-crystal with gold and black enamel mounts. Dial: Gold dial enamelled with floral scrolls and flowers, the chapter-ring with hours I-XII and dot half-hour marks. Blued-steel hand. Movement: Oval gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Mainspring barrel with ratchet and click set-up. Fusee with chain and standard stop-work; three wheel train of gilt-brass wheels, the second wheel and third pinion recessed into the front plate and running in a separate bridge. The second wheel is solid, the third has three crossings. Verge escapement, the pierced foliate balance cock screwed to the back plate. The movement is unsigned and has an engraved floral spray where the signature would normally be. Literature: Baillie, Watches, 1929, pl. XXIII.2 and p. 131. Notes: The characteristics of the enamel work on this watch used in conjunction with the smoky rock-crystal case, together with the incongruous characteristics in the movement design all suggest that this watch is a modern fake, possibly the work of Reinhold Vasters of Vienna.
