Elongated octagonal gilt-brass and silver cased verge watch

Case: Elongated octagonal gilt-brass and silver case with hinged lid and back. The silver lid has eight small panels engraved with hounds, rabbits, squirrels and birds, surrounding a larger central panel engraved with a depiction of Cephalus Receiving the Dog and Dart from Procris. The back is arranged and decorated in a similar manner with an engraving of Meleager Presenting the Head of the Calydonian Boar to Atalanta. The gilt-brass frame has an applied silver band with panels engraved with hounds, rabbits, birds and a wild boar. Silver pendant with loose ring; no finial is intended. Dial: Elongated octagonal silver dial engraved with foliate scrolls and nude figures around and engraved chapter-ring with hours I-XII and arrow-head half-hour marks between two circles. The central area is engraved with a nude female figure. Blued-steel hand. The movement and dial are held in the case by two sprung catches at III and IX o'clock. Movement: Elongated octagonal gilt-brass plates with four baluster pillars. Gilt-brass barrel with ratchet and click set-up, the click now missing. Fusee for gut line with standard stop-work. Three wheel train; verge escapement; pierced foliate balance cock pinned to a stud on the back plate. Movement signed: Charles peyras a Blois Charles Peyras, established in Blois c. 1598, died 1616.
