The Ashmolean

Iraq: Navel of the World

Palace Life [1]

The large earrings and strung jewellery shown here were found on the body of a lady-in-waiting buried with her sovereign in a large communal tomb in the so-called 'Royal Cemetery' at Ur (c.2400 BC). The blue lapis lazuli came all the way from Afghanistan, while the gold had probably travelled from Africa via Egypt.
