Although this ewer and the basin WA1978.170 came to the Museum from separate sources and at different times, the ornament matches closely. Before the use of forks became widespread in the 16th and 17th centuries, ewers and basins of this type were commonly used at table for washing hands. The basins have survived in larger numbers than their ewers, and their moulded decoration is in imitation of metalwork.
