Archive and Artefacts Project

This website forms part of a Heritage Lottery Funded project based on the work of former Keeper of the Ashmolean Museum and prominent archaeologist Edward Thurlow Leeds.

The Ashmolean Museum holds an archive of documents and photographs that belonged to E T Leeds, together with finds from many of the sites he excavated. This website is based on these collections, particularly focusing on Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire.

This project has involved the cataloguing of the Leeds documentary archive by a professional archivist. Details of this archive are now also available on the Access to Archives (A2A) website.

The project has also involved research and documentation on artefacts in the Ashmolean Museum from sites in Oxfordshire excavated by E.T. Leeds. More details of Anglo-Saxon and other sites excavated by E.T. Leeds can be found on this website.

The collection of Anglo-Saxon artefacts at the Ashmolean Museum has used as the basis for an educational website aimed at children - Anglo-Saxon Discovery. This was created with the help of the Education Department in the museum and 2 schools in Oxford. It has been designed for use by schools for teaching Key Stage 2 History as well as for use by the general public.
