Country Life [6]

Sumerian and Babylonian temples and palaces owned large parts of the countryside, whose work they contracted out to outsiders or rented to tenant farmers. This detailed account of a grain harvest, dated 1758 BC, is headed 'Inspection of estimated yields for the fields of soldiers and extra shares, property of the palace and property of the temple of the moon-god Nanna, in Nirda and the town of Kurkarnu'.
