Offerings of food and drink were presented to life-sized statues of the gods, dressed in fine robes and jewellery and wearing horned head-dresses. These statues rarely survive, but archaeologists often find small baked clay replicas in ancient homes. This clay image of a god carrying lion-headed staffs was made in about 1800 BC. On the right, the ivory head of a goddess is about 1000 years younger.
