For centuries Muslim pilgrim caravans have plied their way across Iraq towards Mecca, the birthplace of Islam, as well as to local holy places such as Kerbala and Najaf. This 13th-century manuscript image of a pilgrim caravan conveys the excitement and celebration of such important communal journeys.
