In ancient Sumerian religion, the gods were thought to be divine beings in human form. Each city was associated with its own particular god or goddess, who was worshipped in a temple at the centre of the city. This stone carving, from Kutha near Baghdad (c.2600 BC) shows a shaven-headed priest bringing a sheep and other offerings into the main gate of the temple, made of reeds.
